For Funders

Our plan for achieving our goals has always depended on work in the community, since that’s the only way to reach those who are most vulnerable to online risks.

Putting on local events can be a good way for community groups to engage their audience. It’s different for us. The topic of online safety is not going to bring people in.

Coffee Morning

So we have to co-operate with other non-profits, and “borrow” their audiences. We can reach our borrowed audience with regular online safety messages, and we can learn about the real issues in the locality.

Obviously the information people need should be available online. It should include audio-visual as well as written content, in case they don’t have the time or inclination to read a document. It should be up-to-date, easy to understand, and appropriate to life here in the UK.

It would be impossible for an organisation of our size to meet those requirements solely with in-house material. Apart from the cost and technical challenges, we don’t have expertise to cover all the technical and social issues under the heading of “online safety”. And there’s already a huge amount of good material out there.

To summarise: in the community we find those most in need, and online we signpost information that will help them.

Story So Far

a covid virus

The pandemic didn’t remove the need for community work, it just made it impossible. So our progress was held up, but we used the months effectively by developing our website and the database behind it.

Since then we’ve resumed our work with community organisations and refined our strategy in several important ways, for example adding the facility to build localised web sites with content matching local needs, and using Business WhatsApp groups to provide regular prompts on the latest issues.

While there’s still development to be done, it’s important that in the coming months we expand the scope of what we do, and that’s our task for the coming months.
